Kaposvár is a city in the centre of the Southern-Transdanubian region undergoing a dynamic urban development. With a population of 64,872, with an agglomeration of 120,000 it can be considered a medium-sized city in Hungary. The area of Kaposvár is 113.59 km2.

From an administrative point of view Kaposvár is a county seat, having the same rights as a county.

We are proud of having our own independent university as well as being an Episcopal seat.

Owing to its geographical position, Kaposvár can be considered as one of the Southern gateways of Hungary. Somogy county is the 5th biggest county of Hungary with main tourist attractions including the resorts on the Southern shore of the lake, the village tourism in the quiet villages of Inner Somogy and the numerous spas. The county’s great tracts of forests and the wine-growing region of Southern Balaton are among the favourite destinations of walkers and nature lovers

Kaposvár plays a significant role in the areas of economy, transport, trade and commerce, telecommunication, public administration, education, social services, and provides a number of versatile services in culture and tourism for the inhabitants and business of the region.
The number of registered services in Kaposvár exceeds 11,000.

By road, the city can be reached on 2 main roads from Budapest, the neighbouring cities (Pécs, Nagykanizsa, Dombóvár, Szigetvár) and the Lake Balaton have direct connection by main road to the county seat. By rail, Kaposvár can be accessed from 4 directions: (Dombóvár, Gyékényes, Siófok, Fonyód). 11 kilometres from Kaposvár, the former military airbase of Taszár can be found which is owned by the Hungarian State and is currently out of use.
Kaposvár has a developed infrastructure, and almost 100 % of all households are connected to the water and waste water systems. Connection to the gas supply is on request and most of the city’s public roads have been modernized recently. Public bus service is provided by a municipality-owned firm. There is a county hospital operating in Kaposvár, which has been reconstructed recently and as a result, provides its services with state-of-art equipments in a modern building complex. In 2015, a new regional waste facility was completed.

Kaposvár aims at using only renewable energy by 2050. The public service providers are all in public ownership therefore Kaposvár is one of the cheapest settlements in Hungary to live in and therefore can guarantee a high quality of services. Kaposvár’s main objective is to be one of the green cities of Europe with a future based on renewable energy. To achieve this goal, 2015 saw the full modernization of public lightning, by replacing the traditional bulbs by energy efficient light bulbs in public lightning. The City Baths’ heating system operates with biogas. Kaposvár is planning to build a biomass facility to reduce the price of district heating, solar parks, installing solar panels on municipal-owned buildings. Also, the analysis is being carried out on the possible utilization of wind energy.
